In the past week, federal immigration enforcement has surged in the Twin Cities — part of what officials are calling a major ICE operation. That increase in activity came after an ICE agent fatally shot Renée Good, which sparked large protests and intense backlash. Officials have deployed thousands of federal officers into the community, and there have been multiple shootings, ongoing demonstrations, civil rights concerns, and reports of detentions that tribal leaders say include Native people.

Native American advocates and tribal leaders have said ICE agents are questioning or detaining Indigenous people, sometimes without clear explanation. The Oglala Sioux Tribe says several enrolled tribal citizens were detained and that the operation violates their rights and sovereignty. Many people in our communities are worried about harassment, mistaken identity, and the potential for escalation.

This raises important questions across Indian Country. On one hand, some see clear advantages: predictive gaming and online betting are already happening, with millions of dollars flowing out of Wisconsin to out-of-state operators. Tribal involvement could help keep that revenue here at home while creating new funding streams to support tribal programs, services, and long-term economic stability. It also reflects changing habits, especially among younger generations who increasingly prefer entertainment that comes to them rather than traveling to brick-and-mortar venues. On the other hand, there are concerns worth discussing, including impacts on existing casinos, problem gambling, sovereignty issues, and how digital gaming fits with cultural values and community well-being.

The recent Bad River lawsuit against Enbridge and the Line 5 reroute has sparked deep feelings and serious conversations across Indian Country. It brings up tough questions about sovereignty, treaty rights, environmental protection, and economic survival.

On one hand, some tribes have chosen to work with companies like Enbridge, saying that the financial resources they receive can be used to support community programs, improve infrastructure, and provide for their people. They also argue that, realistically, the pipeline is going to be here regardless, and so having a voice at the table can protect tribal interests.

On the other hand, in the Bad River case, many feel that the risk to their environment, water, and way of life outweighs any monetary benefit. They see the pipeline as a threat to the land, waters, and future generations, and are challenging Line 5 through legal action.

On Monday, Devery Jacobs, who plays Elora Danan Postoak on Reservation Dogs, shared her "painful" experiences watching the film on social media.

"I HAVE THOUGHTS. I HAVE STRONG FEELINGS," began the thread she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "This film was painful, grueling, unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic. Being Native, watching this movie was f---ing hellfire. Imagine the worst atrocities committed against yr ancestors, then having to sit thru a movie explicitly filled w/ them, w/ the only respite being 30min long scenes of murderous white guys talking about/planning the killings."

Wisconsin lawmakers make a push to legalize weed. Not sure if this will happen with a powerful Tavern League opposing it and many republicans still against it, but if it does come, will Wisconsin Tribes be ready for it?
